On 13 February 2025, Jiequan Hong, a PhD student at KEDGE, led a webinar on food waste applications titled "Food Waste Mobile Application Archetypes and Applicability to Non-Western Contexts."

Mobile applications designed to combat food waste have emerged as key tools in reducing waste, either by redistributing surplus food or by improving household food management. However, their development and implementation have been largely confined to Europe and North America, leaving out 80% of the global population. This includes China, which is increasingly contributing to global food waste.

The study aims to:

  • Review existing literature on FWMA (Food Waste Mobile Applications), distilling key archetypes based on business models, stakeholder involvement, and underlying value propositions.
  • Use the National Business Systems framework as a theoretical lens to assess the market potential of these FWMA archetypes in the Chinese context.

This research contributes to the emerging literature on FWMA by highlighting the diversity of business models underpinning these applications and providing insights into their potential for global expansion.

Biography:

Jiequan Hong is a final-year PhD student at KEDGE Business School (Paris campus). He graduated in Industrial Engineering from the South China University of Technology. His research interests are Supply Chain Management, Operation Management, and IT management. His PhD research is centered on mobile food waste applications as a set of sustainable business model innovations.

The Export Market Surveys: How KEDGE Business School Supports French SMEs in Expanding Internationally/news-student/the-export-market-surveyA Hands-On Experience for Students and Businesses

The Export Market Survey project immerses students in the realities of international trade by working directly on market studies for French businesses eager to expand globally. With a group of 15 partner companies, ranging from Piscines Magiline to Séché Environnement, and Circle Sportswear to Bitecone™, the students are tasked with devising internationalisation strategies for targeted markets. The objective is clear: to deliver, within a three-month period, a detailed strategic report, along with a solid action plan for each company, focusing on a specific country or geographical area.

By working in teams, students apply their theoretical skills to real-life scenarios, all while being mentored by export professionals, including Advisors of Foreign Trade (CCE), experts in supporting businesses in their international ventures. This collaboration provides students with a deep understanding of the challenges of exporting, while delivering practical, actionable solutions to the partner companies.

Quality Mentorship with the CCE

The 2025 edition of the Export Market Survey programme was marked by the participation of Kévin Dumoux, Advisor of Foreign Trade, who expressed his excitement in guiding students through this hands-on experience. Alongside Jacques Manlay and Yves de Mestier, also members of the CCE, Kévin Dumoux highlighted the importance of this collaboration in shaping the next generation of international trade leaders.

"Watching our students work on real-world projects, analyse foreign markets, and propose concrete strategies is an exciting experience for us. We look forward to discovering their recommendations and seeing how these talented individuals will tackle the internationalisation challenges faced by our partner companies,"

Kévin Dumoux

The CCE play a key role in the project by offering mentorship and expertise throughout the process, guiding students through the nuances of international markets and effective export strategies.

An Immersive Learning Experience Supporting the Internationalisation of SMEs

The MSc International Business at KEDGE Business School stands out for its handson, practical learning approach. The EMS project allows students to navigate the complexities of international markets, developing strategic solutions for real-world cases, while taking part in a genuine mission to support businesses seeking international growth. On the other hand, the companies involved benefit from valuable recommendations that enable them to better understand the challenges of foreign markets and make informed strategic decisions to grow beyond their domestic borders.

A Rewarding Collaboration with Ambitious Prospects

Mehdi Amiri Aref expressed his gratitude towards the partner companies, emphasising the crucial importance of this initiative in providing students with a rewarding professional experience and a tangible insight into the challenges of internationalisation.

"Many thanks to the companies for their essential collaboration. This project offers a unique opportunity to enrich the students' journeys, prepare them for international challenges, and actively contribute to the growth of French SMEs,"

A webinar led by Ishva Minefee

Ishva Minefee, a professor at the University of Illinois, addressed KEDGE faculty members and PhD students on 12 February 2025, discussing the interactions between multinational corporations and armed groups in conflict zones.

Multinational corporations often face dilemmas when interacting with armed groups during violent conflicts in the regions where they operate. Despite this reality, research into the dynamics and consequences of such interactions remains limited due to the challenges of accessing data on contemporary conflicts.

Ishva Minefee presented a historical case study on Firestone’s interactions with armed groups during the First Liberian Civil War (1989–1997). The analysis draws on U.S. State Department archives, court documents, and oral interviews with various stakeholders. It also incorporates stakeholder and resource dependency theories.

The study revealed that Firestone’s efforts to appease armed groups while maintaining the world’s largest rubber plantation inadvertently escalated the conflict, significantly harming local employees.

This case study responds to recent calls within the field of international business for archival studies on violent conflicts. It provides a unique opportunity to examine the interactions between multinational corporations and armed groups and their far-reaching consequences.

Abstract

This doctoral research explores the emerging phenomenon of collective place branding initiatives aimed at promoting sustainability and revitalizing rural economies through the enhancement of local products.

By adopting a critical and culturally sensitive approach, the study challenges traditional place branding strategies that often reduce places to mere commodities, instead emphasizing the socio-cultural and socio-spatial complexities inherent in collective place branding.

Focusing on rural areas as alternative spaces of consumption, the research demonstrates how collective place branding can address the inequalities and competition introduced by globalized markets.

Through an in-depth qualitative investigation from marketing, tourism, and management perspectives, the study shifts the focus from individual consumption experiences to the market dynamics and collaborative processes that shape place-based initiatives.

It highlights the crucial role of often-overlooked actors, such as restaurateurs and local communities, in developing resilient local food markets and fostering community-driven food tourism by co-constructing local identities and enhancing local resources.

Additionally, the research examines the regulatory function of collective place branding and explores how cross-sectoral partnerships and participatory governance, aligned with sustainability goals, can be established by integrating diverse stakeholder perspectives.

This dissertation offers significant contributions to the literature on place branding, rural development, and sustainable market practices, providing a comprehensive understanding of multi-stakeholder collaborations. It also delivers practical insights for local stakeholders on leveraging collective place branding as a tool for long-term sustainability and community empowerment in rural areas.
